Capturing the magic of adventure

Taynikma books are hugely successful in Scandinavia, with over 250,000 copies sold. Awarded the national Orla award for best children’s graphic novel as voted by Danish children in 2007, Taynikma pioneered a dynamic combination of words and pictures by mixing traditional prose with cartoon-inspired comic book sequences.

This epic story of action and intrigue follows four young champions in their battle against the powerful Empress of Light. Set in a medieval world of weird creatures, magic and mystical clans living underground we experience the fantastic power of a classical fantasy universe. The Rats who are a gang of thieves have stolen the priceless artefact which Koto is carrying with him on his quest. He must embark on a dangerous mission to reclaim his family heirloom. Koto ventures down deep into the mystical caves of The Rats, only to encounter far greater dangers than he could have ever imagined!

I was approached by the UK publishing house to create an online experience for children that captures the magic of Taynikma.

OPPORTUNITY

This was a chance for me to bring to life the magical world envisioned by Merlin P. Mann and Jan Kjær while giving children an immersive experience and a place to share their own drawings with Merlin and Jan.

RESULTS

Using illustration straight out of the books, each page of the site was designed to be scalable html with interactive flash animation underneath complex visuals. Having complete freedom on the composition, the feedback from Merlin and Jan was so positive that out of the entire design and execution I only had one single amend to change the drop-shadow behind the logo to an outer-glow.
